Today in BU Today’s <\/a>“Reaching Out<\/a>” series, we learn more about a School of Law program, the Asylum & Human Rights Clinic<\/a> (AHR), which assigns second and third year law students to help people seeking asylum and fighting deportation. Launched in 1985 by School of Law <\/a>(LAW) Professor Susan Akram<\/a>, the program has helped hundreds of people obtain asylum. The students in the four-course cluster program also handle Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) cases, temporary restraining orders in Probate and Family Court, and other immigration and humanitarian cases.<\/p>\n

The series also looks at the interpreter certificate program<\/a> at Metropolitan College\u2019s Center for Professional Education<\/a>, which\u00a0has been teaching interpreters for more than 15 years and preparing them for careers in the court system, hospitals and other community services.\u00a0\u00a0The 12-to-18 month program prepares interpreters in three languages\u2014Chinese, Portuguese, and Spanish.<\/p>\n

“Reaching Out<\/a>” concludes tomorrow with with\u00a0coverage of\u00a0the School of Education\u2019s Intergenerational Literacy Project<\/a>, which teaches English language literacy skills to entire families.<\/p>\n
