{"id":6378,"date":"2010-07-16T09:44:46","date_gmt":"2010-07-16T13:44:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs-devl.bu.edu\/bunow\/?p=6378"},"modified":"2011-01-20T11:36:23","modified_gmt":"2011-01-20T16:36:23","slug":"progress-in-saving-the-whales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-devl.bu.edu\/bunow\/2010\/07\/16\/progress-in-saving-the-whales\/","title":{"rendered":"Progress in saving the whales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6380\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs-devl.bu.edu\/bunow\/files\/2010\/07\/Stellwagen-Bank-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Stellwagen Bank\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" \/>The Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, an 842-square-mile submerged plateau off Massachusetts with a wealth of endangered whales and old shipwrecks, has finally got the <a title=\"attention\" href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/local\/massachusetts\/articles\/2010\/07\/06\/a_push_to_protect_marine_fishery\/\" target=\"_blank\">attention<\/a> of the federal government.\u00a0A newly released <a title=\"management plan\" href=\"http:\/\/stellwagen.noaa.gov\/management\/fmp\/fmp2010.html\" target=\"_blank\">management plan<\/a> builds\u00a0a\u00a0scientific case for better protecting the sanctuary from humans.\u00a0 Biology Professor <a title=\"Les Kaufman\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/biology\/people\/faculty\/kaufman\/\" target=\"_blank\">Les Kaufman<\/a>, who had a hand in devising it, says in a <em>BU Today<\/em> <a title=\"interview\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/today\/node\/11264\" target=\"_blank\">interview<\/a> that\u00a0the compromise plan still doesn&#8217;t fully protect the area from overfishing and endangering the whale population but it&#8217;s a good start.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Most important of all, it acknowledges that the existing management structure isn\u2019t working, the sanctuary\u2019s health isn\u2019t what it should be, and that\u2019s the goal, to restore its health.
