{"id":301,"date":"2009-05-01T13:07:11","date_gmt":"2009-05-01T17:07:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs-devl.bu.edu\/bunow\/?p=301"},"modified":"2009-05-01T14:26:30","modified_gmt":"2009-05-01T18:26:30","slug":"souter-retiring-from-supreme-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs-devl.bu.edu\/bunow\/2009\/05\/01\/souter-retiring-from-supreme-court\/","title":{"rendered":"Souter retiring from Supreme Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With word that Justice David Souter will retire from the Supreme Court, Law Professor <a title=\"Jack Beerman\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/faculty\/profiles\/bios\/full-time\/beermann_j.html\" target=\"_blank\">Jack Beerman<\/a>, an authority on the court, says former law-school professor Obama is in a unique position to nominate a successor.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;President Obama, having been a law professor and president of the Harvard Law Review, is in a unique position to make an informed choice of a replacement for Justice Souter.\u00a0 He has a greater personal familiarity with the available choices and a greater understanding of the process than any president in recent memory.\u00a0 Given the president&#8217;s experience and the quality of his advisors, one thing is certain &#8212; he will make a high-quality pick.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Meantime,\u00a0Law Professor <a title=\"Jay Wexler\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/faculty\/profiles\/bios\/full-time\/wexler_j.html\" target=\"_blank\">Jay Wexler<\/a>, a former clerk to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, recalls Souter as being perhaps the best justice at probing counsels appearing before the high court.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I always liked listening to his questions.
