Metropolitan College and Jacques Pepin are hosting “The Big Event”, a celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Culinary Arts Program, tonight beginning at 6 PM at 808 Commonwealth Ave. Founded by culinary extraordinaire Julia Child, the culinary program examines the role of food in historical and contemporary societies from various perspectives. Many technology companies facing timid customers and increasing competition -- e.g., Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, Cisco, and for the first time Juniper Networks -- are ramping up advertising campaigns. Advertising Professor John Verret, a 40-year veteran of the ad business, says they can thank Apple for showing that great messages, widely disseminated, build great markets.
"All the tech/Internet brands are going to try to ‘out Apple’ one another. This will be fun – and it’s a great sign for the economy."

According to Reuters.com, Federal investigators are looking into the "smart choices" food labeling program for misleading the public. Director of the Food and Nutrition Center at Sargent College Stacy Zawacki helped to found BU's Sargent Choice food labeling program and is available for interviews on this topic. The Women’s Studies Program is hosting a panel discussion led by Professor Diane Balser today beginning at 4:30 PM in the Law Barristers Hall. The event will address the issue of gender inequality in Law Professor Linda McClain’s co-edited book, “Gender Equality: Dimensions of Women’s Equal Citizenship”. Distinguished scholars in law, political science, and women’s studies, the panelists will investigate the many dimensions of women’s equal citizenship, including constitutional citizenship, democratic citizenship, social citizenship, sexual and reproductive citizenship, and global citizenship. In an unprecedented move for a major business, HealthSouth Corp. will reimburse activist shareholders for the costs involved with unseating management-backed directors. LawProfessor Elizabeth Nowicki, a former SEC and Wall Street attorney, says the HealthSouth initiative may mark a sea change in how boards respond to shareholders clamoring for accountability.
"Now that HealthSouth has voluntarily given shareholders’ more access to proxy contests and director elections, activist shareholders are likely to be emboldened and other boards are going to feel pressure to address the issue."

The Massachusetts Graduation and Dropout Prevention and Recovery Commission met last week and determined that there is cause for the commission to recommend upping the mandatory school attendance age from 16 to 18. Boston University School of Education Dean Hardin Coleman extensively studied high school truancy and is available to for comment on this, and other, education related topics.

In an effort to avoid unnecessary risk taking in the financial services
industry, the Federal Reserve has issued guidelines regulating bankers' pay. Law Professor Cornelius Hurley, director of the Morin Center for Banking and Financial Law and a former counsel to the Fed Board of Governors, says it's a welcome step but not enough.
What is missing is a recognition that the empowerment of shareholders through ‘say on pay’ and other governance changes is the most powerful way for controlling out-of-control pay practices."

In unprecedented moves, President Obama's "pay czar" has put restrictions on compensation for top earners at the 7 biggest recipients of taxpayer bailout funds, while the Federal Reserve issued new guidelines to restrict pay practices at all banks to prevent excessive risk taking. School of Management Professor James Post, an expert on corporate governance and business ethics, says the times are a-changin'.
"We are in a new era of financial reform and it’s clear that Wall Street’s ‘heads I win, tails I don’t lose’ mindset is going to be challenged by the White House, the pay czar, and ordinary Americans."
